About Compass Ecological By Owner, Josh Rossell
Founded in 2022, Compass Ecological sprouted from my love for the outdoors and deep appreciation of the ecosystems that once covered Iowa. At one point, 85% of Iowa was prairie. Today we have less than 0.1% remaining. I believe that by bringing native plants into people’s yards, we can make a difference for the animals that depend on them for survival and bring people closer to nature.
Referring to Compass Plant, Silphium laciniatum, a hallmark of the tallgrass prairies of Iowa. Rising as tall as 12 feet and with roots sometimes 16 feet deep, it’s thought this member of the sunflower or Asteraceae family can live up to 100 years. The name Compass Plant comes from it’s tendency to orient it’s dinner plate-sized leaves north and south to avoid the harsh mid-day summer sun.
